The Secret Cabal, Exposed!

Deep within TransMetro there exists a formerly secret cabal dedicated to the maintenance of the status quo at any cost. The solemn creed of this cabal is to ensure that commuter passenger numbers never rise past a secret threshold, by strategically degrading key services whenever passenger growth is threatened.

How do I know this?

Recent circumstances have forced the cabal out into the open, into overt disruption of services. No longer can they lurk in the background, reliant on the general willingness of the public to accept feeble excuses. Passenger numbers on the Wellington rail network continue to rise, whether due to poor economic conditions, rising petrol costs or a growing awareness of ecological issues, it matters not.

Anyone can see that the sheer number of incidents so far in 2009 is far higher than can be reasonably explained by simple “operational failure”.

Occam’s Law states that given two otherwise equivalent explanations, we should favour the simpler as more reasonable. "Hear hoof-beats, expect horses, not zebras" as one person put it. Given the statistical anomaly before us, I suggest that it is not only reasonable to infer the presence of the cabal but obligatory that we do so.

What can be done? Only what must be done.

First, we must ensure that the cabal’s efforts to sabotage Wellingtons commuter services fail, that passenger counts continue to climb despite their panicked attempts to the contrary.

Secondly, we must hold TransMetro responsible for their services, requiring of them both an accounting of their performance and a tangible improvement. By doing this we can force the cabal out into the light of public scrutiny where their power will wither.

We commuters must make it clear that Wellingtons commuter rail services are ours, that TransMetro operates these rail services on our behalf and that the required quality of service delivery is much higher than they currently achieve.
